The Dark Side
While there are many different shades of darkness, almost everyone can agree that black is the darkest color. The color black represents power, fear, mystery, and strength. It is often seen as acolor of sophistication and formalism. In the world of fashion, black is always in style. It is a color that can make you look thinner and it has a slimming effect.
In Western countries, black is often associated with death and mourning. In Eastern countries, however, white is associated with death. In China, Korea, and Japan specifically, white clothes are worn at funerals. This is because the color white represents purity, cleanliness, and new beginnings.
Whether you see the color black as negative or positive, one thing is for sure: it makes a statement. It stands out and demands attention. When used in art, black can create contrast and make other colors pop out more. It can also be used to create a feeling of emptiness or sadness.
What do you think about the color black? Do you like wearing it? Do you think it’s too depressing? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
“Are You Afraid of the Dark?” has been consistently rated as one of the best horror anthology series ever made. It is truly a classic in the genre.
The show originally aired on Nickelodeon from 1992-1996, and was revived for a single season in 1999. It has since been syndicated on various cable networks, including The hub, Chiller, and TeenNick.
The show features a group of kids who call themselves “The Midnight Society.” They would gather around a campfire in the woods, and take turns telling scary stories. The stories were usually based on urban legends or folk tales, with a healthy dose of campiness thrown in.
Despite its target audience of pre-teens, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was surprisingly dark and creepy at times. This was no doubt due to the talented writers and directors who worked on the show.
The acting was also top-notch, particularly from Ross Hull (Gary) and Rachel Blanchard (Kirsten). Both Hull and Blanchard went on to have successful careers after “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
If you’re looking for a classic horror anthology series that is still entertaining today, then you can’t go wrong with “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
It has been over 25 years since the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? first terrified a generation of young viewers, and now the eerie Canadian anthology series is being revived for a new generation of kids to enjoy…or be haunted by. The new Are You Afraid of the Dark? features an updated look and feel, but at its core it remains a show that tells campfire stories meant to terrify its viewers.
The show’s format is simple: each episode features a new group of kids (the “Midnight Society”) who gather around a campfire to share scary stories. The twist is that each story is then played out on screen for the viewers to see. In the case of the pilot episode, “The Tale of the Twisted Claw”, the story being told is about a cursed carnival claw game that comes to life and starts killing people. As the storyteller describes what happens, we see it play out in front of us in all its gory glory.
This particular episode does a great job of setting up the series’ recurring elements. We are introduced to the new Midnight Society members, including Akiko (played by Sam Ashe Arnold), an anthropomorphic raccoon who serves as the group’s leader; Rioux (Mishka Thebeau), a younger girl with an imaginary friend who may or may not be real; Tucker (Jade Fraser), an aspiring filmmaker; Ashley (Lyla Ryder), a girl who is afraid of pretty much everything; and Gavin (Dominic Marceau), the newest member of the group who has yet to prove himself. Eachcharacter has their own distinct personality, and it’s clear that there is potential for interesting dynamics between them as the series goes on.
The original Are You Afraid of the Dark? was known for its willingness to go dark and even disturbing at times, and it seems like this new version will be no different. In addition to “The Tale of the Twisted Claw”, other episodes in this first season include “The Tale of Hackaville”, about a small town being terrorized by a hacker; “The Tale of Blood Moon”, about vampires; and “The Tale of Chosen One”, which appears to deal with some kind of demonic possession. If these sound like they might be too intense for younger viewers, that’s because they probably are – but that’s part of what makes Are You Afraid of the Dark? so much fun. It knows its audience and it knows how to deliver scares that will stay with you long after you turn off the lights.
The show is intriguing and different enough to be worth a watch for almost anyone, but it isn’t perfect. The acting is occasionally stilted, the plot devices are sometimes clichéd and the scares aren’t always as effective as they could be. However, these are all minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things. “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” is a smart, well-made show that’s creepy, funny and full of heart. It’s definitely worth checking out.
