The best of 2018

It’s been an eventful year, to say the least. From political turmoil and environmental disasters to scientific breakthroughs and remarkable acts of kindness, 2018 has had its fair share of ups and downs.

As we say goodbye to this turbulent year and look ahead to 2019, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of the positive moments that made 2018 a little brighter.

In January, the #MeToo movement continued to gain momentum as women around the world spoke out against sexual harassment and assault. The movement inspired others to share their own stories of abuse and sparked important conversations about consent, respect and equality.

Later in the year, several countries made strides in the fight for gender equality. In June, Iceland became the first country in the world to make it illegal to pay men more than women for doing the same job. And in November, Rwanda elected its first female president.

On a lighter note, 2018 was also a big year for pop culture. Marvel’s Black Panther became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, while Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot helped countless people feel more confident in themselves. The world said goodbye to some iconic celebrities — including Aretha Franklin, Stephen Hawking and Anthony Bourdain — but welcomed new life into the world with royal babies Prince Louis and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

These are just a few of the many reasons why 2018 will be remembered fondly by many people around the globe. As we move forward into 2019, let’s continue working together to make it a better world for everyone.
