A Plague Tale: Innocence is a narrative-driven action-adventure stealth video game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on May 14, 2019.
The game is set in the 14th century during the outbreak of the Black Death in Europe. The player controls two protagonists: Amicia De Runes, a fifteen-year-old girl, and her five-year-old brother Hugo, who are on the run from the Inquisition. They must travel through France, avoiding both inquisitors and the plague-infested rats that fills the country side. Along the way they meet other children who joins their group as they travel towards safety.
The game received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its story, atmosphere, and characters.
The game’s protagonists are Amicia and Hugo de Rune, siblings living in 14th century France. The pair are on the run from the Inquisition, who believe Hugo to be afflicted with a curse that makes him immune to the deadly rats who have taken over the country. Swarms of these rats will strip a grown man to the bone in seconds, and so the siblings must use their wits and stealth to survive.
The game’s other main character is Lucas, a young man they meet on their journey who joins their fight against the Inquisition. Lucas is a skilled archer, and together the three of them make for a well-rounded team that must use all of their skills to survive.
A Plague Tale is a story-driven game, and its characters are some of the best video game characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with. Amicia and Hugo’s relationship is believable and genuine, making for an emotional journey that I won’t soon forget. Lucas is also an excellent addition to the game, his skills complementing Amicia and Hugo’s perfectly. The three of them together make for one of my favorite video game trios.
A Plague Tale: Innocence is one of those games that hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve always been a fan of historical settings, but this game does something special with its setting and period that few games have done for me before. The game is absolutely gorgeous, from the smallest details like the way Aveline’s hair moves in the wind, to the grand vistas of 15th century France. It’s clear that a lot of care went into making this game look as good as it possibly could, and it paid off in spades.
The game’s sound design is excellent. The music is haunting and increases the sense of unease, while the sound effects are used to great effect, such as when rats swarm and bury a guard alive.
A Plague Tale is a stealth game that tasks players with avoiding detection by both the authorities and the deadly rats that infest the French countryside. The game is set during the Black Death of the 14th century, and players take on the role of young Amicia de Rune, who must protect her little brother Hugo from both threats.
To avoid being seen by either rats or soldiers, players must use the environment to their advantage, hiding in tall grass or using unlit torches to light their way through dark areas. The game also features a crafting system, which allows players to create items like molotov cocktails and distraction devices to help them stay hidden.
While A Plague Tale does have some combat sequences, they are few and far between. For the most part, this is a game about stealthily avoiding danger, and it does that very well. The gameplay is tense and atmospheric, and the rat-infested environments are truly horrifying. If you’re looking for a stealth game with a unique setting and solid gameplay, A Plague Tale is definitely worth checking out.
Overall, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a very strong game. It looks great, sounds great, and tells a mature and engaging story. It’s not perfect – the combat can be a bit tedious at times, and the game is on the shorter side – but these are relatively small complaints. If you’re looking for a new game to play, I would highly recommend giving A Plague Tale: Innocence a try.
In A Plague Tale: A Review, I gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 rating. I enjoyed the game’s story, puzzles, and combat. The game’s stealth mechanic was also well executed. However, I felt that the game’s length was a bit too short and that the ending was abrupt.

A Plague Tale: A Review is a beautiful, narrative-driven game with excellent stealth mechanics and an interesting setting. The game does an excellent job of immersing the player in its world and telling a gripping story. The stealth mechanics are also very well done, and provide a good challenge for the player. Overall, A Plague Tale: A Review is an excellent game and well worth your time.
While the atmosphere and story are engaging, the game falters in a few key areas. The combat, for example, is simplistic and often boils down to spamming the same attack over and over again. The stealth is also not particularly well done, with many guards being able to see you even when you’re in complete darkness. Finally, the game is quite short, clocking in at around 10 hours.
